RSC ANDERLECHT-LIVERPOOL FC - 19/10/2005

Dozens of Liverpool supporters detained in Brussels

Dozens of Liverpool supporters were detained in Brussels overnight as the English football club made its first return here since the Heysel disaster 20 years ago, security officials said.

Some 74 supporters were held and warned for trying to get into the ground of local side Anderlecht without tickets during their Champions League clash in the capital, the Belga news agency reported, citing the head of security.

Minor scuffles were also reported outside the ground, but there were no major reports of violence, with almost 350 police mobilised for the match.

"This will serve as a lesson to Chelsea supporters," said the official charged with security for the game, Philippe Boucar. Chelsea is also playing in Group G.

Officials also noted the warm atmosphere inside the stadium, with both groups of supporters applauding each other after the final whistle.

Thirty-nine people were killed during the final of this competition's predecessor on May 29, 1985, when Liverpool were playing Italian side Juventus.

Swiss police fired plastic bullets to stop violent clashes between rival supporters ahead of the UEFA cup tie between Middlesbrough and Grasshoppers.
Around 800 fans travelled to Zurich, and police said the vast majority showed restraint in the face of provocation by local hooligans.
There were a number of clashes and police fired baton rounds and tear gas to restore order.
No Middlesbrough supporters were hurt and their team went on to win 1-0.
Supt Stephen Swales, district commander of Middlesbrough, said most of the away fans enjoyed the build-up to the match by relaxing in the city's pavement cafes and mixing well with locals.
'Known risk'
But around 25 Swiss hooligans tried to confront a larger group of English supporters, until police intervened.
Then, just before the match, around 30-35 local thugs attacked Middlesbrough supporters drinking in a bar outside the stadium, and turned over chairs and tables.
Riot police fired baton rounds and tear gas to retain order, although water canon remained on stand-by.
A small group of "known-risk" 'Boro fans then sought out Swiss supporters and a brief fight took place, although no-one was arrested.
Mr Swales said: "There was increased tension before the game but the match passed off peacefully.
"Ninety-nine per cent of Middlesbrough supporters showed great restraint and caused no problems whatsoever."

Riot police used tear gas and rubber bullets against a gang of Swiss football thugs as violence flared before Boro's UEFA Cup tie last night.

Crystal Palace - Brighton & Hove Albion - 18/10/2005

Fans held after clashes in pubs
Two pubs in south London have been clearing up after football fans from Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace clashed ahead of a game.

Landlords in Whitehorse Road, near Selhurst Park, said hundreds of pounds worth of damage was caused.
John Kichenside, of the Palace-supporting Duke of Cambridge pub, claimed the trouble began when away fans were refused entry.
Police arrested 10 people before, during and after Tuesday's match.

Windows smashed

The rival fans threw chairs and other objects at the Duke of Cambridge and The Crescent Arms, forcing both pubs to close.
Mr Kichenside said the whole experience had been very frightening.
"We just did our best to block the doorway and when they realised that they weren't getting into the pub... they smashed the tables and chairs, they broke windows, they picked the sign up, ashtrays, anything they could get hold of," he said.
Crystal Palace FC have refused to comment on the events, but Brighton and Hove Albion FC said in a statement: "The vast majority of supporters behaved themselves, enjoyed the game and got behind the team - they were a credit to the club.
"If there were any so-called fans who misbehaved, then they were very much in the minority."

Albion fans in pre-match violence

Violence in the streets erupted hours before Brighton and Hove Albion went head to head with their oldest rivals.
Rival fans clashed in the run-up to last night's match between the Seagulls and Crystal Palace.
Up to 70 aggressive supporters from both sides smashed windows, trashed a pub and fought each other a couple of hours before kick-off at Palace's home ground Selhurst Park.
The trouble flared in Whitehorse Road and Holmesdale Road, near Selhurst train station. Bystanders said it was a mini-riot.
Landlords of two pubs caught in the cross-fire said they were shocked by the violence.
Eyewitness accounts said the trouble started when Albion fans drinking in the Crescent Arms in Whitehorse Road came into contact with Palace supporters at about 5.45pm, two hours before kick-off.
The Crescent Arms is a popular pub with home fans.
Licensee Ryan Arscott said: "We had a lot of trouble. Crystal Palace supporters rushed the pub and started to throw things at the windows. It was pandemonium for a good 20 minutes."
Across the street, eyewitnesses said windows at The Duke of Cambridge in Holmesdale Road were smashed by Albion supporters. They had been refused entry because the pub is advised by the police not to let in away fans.
Joint licensee Diane Ridley said: "There were about 20 of them. They weren't what I would call teenagers. They were 20, 25, 30."
Police broke up the trouble but no arrests were made.

Newcastle United - Sunderland - 23/10/2005

Arrests as rival supporters clash

Up to 20 arrests were made after more than 300 people were involved in mass disorder in Newcastle.

Violence flared on Sunday evening after Newcastle United beat rivals Sunderland 3-2, in a match at the city's St James' Park stadium.

Extra officers had to be drafted in to deal with the trouble, which happened several hours after the game.

Northumbria Police said it appeared "alcohol was a factor" in the violence. The match itself passed off peacefully.

Minor skirmishes

Dep Chief Con David Warcup said people had been involved in several hours of drinking before the trouble erupted.

"We will be investigating this outbreak and looking into how and why it happened," he said.

"This is the sort of behaviour which happens when a large number of people have been drinking over an extended period of time.

"Clearly some people were intent on causing problems and we will be trying to identify them as part of our inquiries."

There had been minor skirmishes after the match when rival fans goaded each other, but police said mounted officers and dog handlers successfully separated them.

Boro fans warned over UEFA tie - 27/10/2005

Source : BBC NEWS

Police in Teesside and Holland have taken steps to prevent a repeat the of violence which marred Middlesbrough's last Uefa Cup tie, in Switzerland.

Plastic bullets were used when violent clashes erupted ahead of Boro's game with Grasshoppers on 21 October.

Cleveland Police said after consulting Dutch colleagues it had advised Middlesbrough to offer tickets only to fans who travel with the club.

Middlesbrough travel to face AZ Alkmaar on 24 November.

Middlesbrough has received an allocation of just 408 tickets for the away tie.

Travel package

Supt Steve Swales of Cleveland Police said: "My colleagues in Holland have expressed their wish to deal with the Middlesbrough contingent as a whole group and moving our fans en masse from the airport to Alkmaar town and subsequently to the stadium.

"Our joint advice to Middlesbrough Football Club is to sell the match tickets as part of a complete travel package only.

"The disorder we witnessed in Zurich reinforced our concerns and this option will go a big way to ensuring the safety of our supporters."

A spokesman for Middlesbrough Football Club added: "On the advice of police in Cleveland and in Holland, as well as the football authorities, our ticket allocation will only be made available to those travelling with the trip organised on our behalf by TravelCare Sports.

"We understand that, despite our earlier advice not to do so, many fans have already made their travel arrangements, but we trust supporters will understand that we must follow the advice we have been given on safety grounds."

Around 800 Boro fans travelled to Zurich, and police said the vast majority showed restraint in the face of provocation by local hooligans.
