this took a long time, there might be mistakes but i was too tired to go back and read it again...

Belgrade is about 1200 km away. At first site it looks to be too far away to maintain a friendship, the relationship between the organized supporters of Red Star and Olympiakos is by now well know. Recently a lot has been said – and not without reason – about this relationship, because the reputation of this brotherly friendship that has been created in the last 21 years has passed the borders of our country and reached the football circles of all of Europe.

We wanted to find the “source” of this friendship, and how and under what conditions it was born, because up until today it was a myth to any fan who wanted to have an opinion on the brotherships with “our brothers”, the Serbs. We went to Belgrade on the weekend that Red Star was playing host to the “hated” Partizan. At the “El Classico” of Serbia, where Olympiakos fans usually – as they did this time – make a good presence in a show of support for the “red and white brothers”.

The Meeting

Belgrade has a… warlike face on the day of the derby between Red Star and Partizan, as everywhere there are policemen (even if they are trying to be as conspicuous as possible) ready to intervene if necessary. Its derby-day in the capital and no one seems to have forgot it. At our hotel there are some Greeks, who have been in Belgrade before for derby days. “You’re going to see what a derby means, these people are simply amazing!” they tell us and it doesn’t take long for us to see it ourselves.

Four Serbs, with two cars come to the hotel and say hello to others who are there drinking their coffee. They are other Red Star fans… as soon as the necessary introductions are made, we explain who we are – we had talked to them on the phone in the days before – and we get in the cars and go to the place where the… preparation party for the big derby will make place. In Serbia there are no supporters clubs as we know them in Greece. The groups use a pub, a club where all the “likeminded” and not know it is theirs. So we went to one of these… but the most hardcore of them!

The pub

We stop outside a shop from where we can hear very loud music. Across the street two policemen watch us while the whole pub comes out to greet the “brothers” from Greece. The atmosphere is very friendly and festive. In the shop there are only Red Star fans, mainly older in age, who have started their necessary beer consumption.
We meet Marko, the president of the club, and we ask him to tell us how he feels about the brothership with the Olympiakos fans. “Proud” is the first word he loudly says, while putting his hand on his heart. “We have proved all these years that a friendship between to supporter movements can become something more than about teams, to become personal relationships”, he says and he sends us to the man called “grandfather” for further explanations. Kirle, as he is called, is a 46 year old. He is sitting at a table with two “colleagues”. He welcomes us with a smile, after the proper introductions we unleashes his memories, the last of which is the beginning of this strong friendship.

“It all started in 1986. We where playing against panathinaikos for the UEFA cup at the OAKA stadium. We got to Athens the night before. At the hotel where we were sitting “fat john” came and asked me for tickets to the game. He explained that Panathinaikos where to them what Partizan was to us and that him and his group wanted to support Red Star in our game. I said “OK, how many tickets do you want?”. “200” he answered. “I didn’t believe him. I started laughing and told him that 200 tickets would cost a lot of money for me to simply take his word for them.” He asked me how much money I needed and after a little calculating I told him the amount. He went like this and started counting money. “Tomorrow we’ll be there” he said. And he was. They came, the sang with us, they helped us a lot.
“At the end of the game he comes to me again and tells me that for the replay they will come from Athens by bus, to support us again. That is where I really started laughing a lot. Back then it wasn’t usual for someone to travel to games away from their country for they’re own team, much less to for someone else’s team. Giannis saw me smiling and said in a serious tone that the morning of the day we were playing Panathinaikos there would be a bus of Olympiakos fans in Belgrade. Later we talked about it between us and laughed about it. The day of the game came and in the morning the inform me that some Greeks are looking for tickets. I went and saw not one, but two buses waiting outside the Marakana!!!. I went crazy, I couldn’t believe it” the “grandfather” says to us and his face shines.
Later on and people keep coming into the pub. From the speaker Red Star songs are playing non-stop and every so often everyone gets together and sings the lyrics. Serbian is a difficult language and you need to practice if you want to understand even one word. We ask Kirle what he feels about the friendship that has grown between them and the Olympiakos fans, that started on a terrace and has lasted 21 years. “I don’t know if you can understand this… but to me it is something very important. I can do anything for my friends the Greeks. I can fight by their side if I am asked. It is very strong”, and he starts to talk about things he has lived all these years. “Even when we had the war, when we asked our brothers for help we had it. They gave us money when we needed it o live, to support families who were hungry and that is something I can never forget” he says and he is proud that, from 1978 when he started his journey in football, he has never taken a step back, with the results that his ribs are much smaller than the normal!!

Another Red Star fan is listening to our conversation and he jumps in: “friend, the friends of Olympiakos are friends of ours. Olympiakos fans are our brothers, and their enemies are our enemies. I have never been to Greece, but sometime I will. Panathinaikos is our enemy too. I will never step back, I will do whatever my brothers do I nGreece” It is obvious that I can see hate in some of the peoples eyes, hate that touches or even goes past the limits, like it did in Greece at the incidents in Paiania, and that surely will never lead anywhere…

The Trip to the stadium

The time went by and the people became more. There must have been about an hour until the game, when the order was given to leave the pub. With one sign from the “grandfather” and the cue from Marko, everyone got up. They poured into the street, starting the march from an alley that is next to the pub. There must have been over one hundred people who started the “walk”, while the point was to find the “mice”, as they call the partisan fans.
During the trip no one spoke to anyone else. With a… harmonious anarchy we walked through narrow streets, until we ended up on a central road, while in the distance we could see the pylons of the stadium. We took over one of the lanes of thr road and walked in it. I asked the “grandfather” who was next to me: “Is the road closed because of the game or did we just close it?” “This road is mine” he answered smiling, with a friendly pat on my back.
We get close to a stadium, It is not the famous Marakana, but Partizans. The two stadiums are 300 meters away, even thought he organized supporters of the teams hate each other passionately, a fact that causes surprise. “They fix the draw so that when one of us plasys at home the other one plays away” they answer to our question about how the two teams “live together”. When we pass the stadium, by now we are escorted by the police, some throw beer bottles at the walls and the chants get much louder compared to the beginning of the march, which is now more than 300 people.

The Marakana

Getting close to the Marakana stadium the people see the marching fans coming from far away join the chants that the fans are singing. The walk imperiously to their “home” the north bank, the so called “Sever” which is host to the hardcore fans of Red Star. There are lots of people waiting to enter the stadium. Big lines at the entrance to the gates. We enter the stadium. The end is nearly full.

The Game

The Red Star – Partizan game is a derby, in every sense of the word. The two ends fight to conquer the… air above the Marakana, with chants and songs.A police helicopter is continuously flying around above the stadium… the terrace of the organized Red Star supporters is the same as olympiakos’. Red and white colors everywhere, people of all ages, women, children. Banners, songs, drums… the same across the stadium with the only difference that they are wearing black and white. Someone next to us mentions that they are waving a PAOK flag, but I can’t see it. Partizan’s logo is similar to PAOKs, as are their fans who sing similar songs to the fans from Thessaloniki.
The Partizan goal gives the signal to the opposition to “burn” the terrace they are on. Tens of flares light up in a moment, while at the same time the Red Star songs get louder, to give their players more inspiration.
With the start of the second half Red Star manage to tie the score causing pandemonium in the north bank. All sorts of flares are lit and thrown in to the pitch. The picture reminds us of Gate 7 in the old Karaiskaki and the two employees who where ordered with putting out the fireworks which are thrown in special barrels.
Partizan quickly get a two goal difference, which cause the intense celebrations from the “black and white” fans. The red Star fans, after a quiet couple of minutes, understand the defeat is inevitable on the pitch and are determined to win they’re own match, the match of the terraces. Choreographies start, banners are lifted, flares are lit… one 30 meter banner is raised that is about the brothership and covers the rails of the bank. “for 21 years our heart beats strongly and proudly in Belgrade, brother forever together, Delije” The bank claps and shouts “Olympiakos – Olympiakos”. At the same time a banner is raise showing all the teams that are “brothers” with Partizan. Among these are AEK and PAOK.
The celebration in the stands – in contrast with the funeral on the pitch – is holding up. The final whistle of the referee signals big celebrations from the Partizan fans and damnation from the Red Star fans. For the 11th year in a row Partizan beats the “red and whites” in the Marakana (I KNOW THAT IS THE WRONG WAY AROUND, I JUST TRANSLATED IT AS IT WAS, THE GUY THAT WROTE THE ARTICLE GOT CONFUSED). The fact that in Serbia “doping control” is still unheard of might explain the superiority of Partizan. For whatever reason, they won the derby and the players left the pitch in their underwear…

The Epilogue

When we started these story we really didn’t know what we would find. The unwritten laws say the supporters see the reporters as “threats”. Yet in Belgrade we never, even for a moment, felt uncomfortable with the Serbs that they might be menacing to us. In fact, it was exactly the opposite. What conclusion did we come to? The Greeks sn Serbs are connected in many ways anyway, in culture and in character. They talk about Greece with love: from the taxi driver to the waiter, as soon as you mention the word “Greece” everyone smiles and is friendly. However what has developed between the fans of Red Star and Olympiakos is something much stronger.
These people have sacrificed a lot, especially after the war in the former Yugoslavia, yet they can open their house and bring you in to eat what might be the only plate of food that they have. And it is impressive not how this brothership started, but how it keeps getting stronger with more and more bonds. One thing is for sure, if you are ever in Belgrade do not hesitate for a second to say that you are Greek, and even more do not hesitate to say you are Olympiakos. Some will smile at you, some will treat you better, but all will greet you in the same way: “Brade” which means “Friend”.!

Note: “Red Believers” in no circumstances claims that it has anything to do with extremism in supporters, We report the truth which is simply the relationship that exists for many years between the supporters of these two teams. And this brothership of the red faithfulls is unique, it is wonderful.
