There are some people who say that "Delije" it's Turkish word and means "Turk on a horse" and that it comes from the Turkish word "Deli" which means "Crazy". What does really means "Delije"? _________________ ΘΥΡΑ 7 - ДЕЛИЈЕ СЕВЕР

`delije` is turkish word, but it doesnt means `turk on horse`, it means crazy man, better say crazy horse man, in turkish i think, but at serbs it represents brave man, old people use that word when thay want to say for some one that his good and brave, strong...etc.
word is turkish, as some others that we use, but meaning in serbian has nothing to do with turkish background of that word, we also use turkish `solun` for tesalloniki, that just the way it is.after three and half century of turkish occupation some words left in people, much of that words has little with original meaning
for us is much important what that word represents in our people _________________ ОКРЕЧИТЕ БЕОГРАД!!! |

Delije meens crazy, brave in turkish and thats why they named -Delije- forces made from Ortodox Serbs who fighted for sultans army when Serbia becomed vazal (what is english word for vazal?) contry in otoman empair. From that time people in Serbia started to use this word for very brave people, for big heroes, for brave people, for honest men. Today we have many words in our language wich are not orginal Serbian words. I cant explaine this in english. But anyway i can try. For example, you probubly say in Greece -computer- but this word is not Greek. In every language you have many words from other languages, like we have some from turkish becose we have been long time ocupated by them. For example, they brought coffe with them and then Serbs first time started to use this drink, and naturaly, they named it -kava- becose they didint know before turks for -kava-cofee- (kava is turkish word for coffe, today in Serbia we say -kafa- and we call it also, even today, -turkish cofee-turska kafa-). Today we have also many words from english, specialy about modern tehnology and that is how things works with languages. When our older men founded DELIJE they wanted to name it with real caracteristic of the people who camed in this group. Thats why they named it DELIJE becose DELIJE is the best word to describe mentality of us! _________________

In Bulgarian language there's word "делия" too. The meaning is same - madly brave man. As far as I know the word has Turk language roots and during the Ottoman yoke it was used to describe, to mark the brave christians. _________________ URBAN ORDER |

Origin word delije is for turkish horse regiment who was elite fighters in that time and very brave. Somthing like todays commandos but no horses. Becose we was ocupated we get words from theyr language and one of them is Delije and translated on serbian it mean brave strog man warrior, hero. _________________ Tufi a bored twenty something who lives for the weekend, casual sex, watered down lager, heavily cut drugs….
